Evergreen Park School District 124 SOPPA Compliance

The Student Online Personal Protection Act (SOPPA) places new requirements on school districts, vendors and the Illinois State Board of Education effective July 1, 2021.

These requirements are additional guarantees that student data is protected when being collected and is only used for beneficial purposes only.

What does this mean for parents?

• Increased transparency
• More protection of student data
• Ability to inspect and review vendor disclosures in regards to student data.
• Data breach notification

What does this mean for the district?

• Requiring vendors to sign contracts to ensure compliance with SOPPA
• Posting of information for the public
• Ensure compliance is being maintained

Sex Offender List
Information on registered sex offenders is available on the State of Illinois website, http://www.isp.state.il.us/sor/.This information is being provided in accordance with the Illinois Sex Offender Registration Act-Notification to Parents (Public Act 94-994).

Help Prevent Teen Dating Violence
An Illinois law aimed at preventing unhealthy dating relationships requires upper-elementary, middle schools and high schools to incorporate age appropriate education about teen dating violence into their curriculum. As a result, beginning this school year, our schools will be teaching students the signs and symptoms of an unhealthy relationship, how to respond, and who to notify. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that one in eleven adolescents say they have been the victim of physical dating violence. Healthy or unhealthy relationship habits may develop early. High school students report that they see dating violence among their peers. Dating violence during teen years can lead to unhealthy relationships. This may disrupt normal development and can contribute to other destructive behaviors in our children. Erin’s Law
Erin’s Law is named after childhood sexual assault survivor, author, speaker and activist Erin Merryn. Erin’s Law (in Illinois, Public Act 96-1524) mandates that Illinois public schools provide training to certified staff on prevention of child sexual abuse. It also mandates that public school children pre-kindergarten through 12th grade be educated on how to protect themselves from sexual abuse. Students learn age-appropriate techniques to recognize child sexual abuse and tell a trusted adult. School personnel learn about child sexual abuse. Any questions or concerns can be addressed by building administrators or the school social worker.

Pre-K Expulsion
P.A. 100-0105 prohibits early childhood providers from expelling young children from their program because of the child's behavior. School personnel must instead take the following steps:

   a. Document interventions to assist with addressing the child's behavior and other needs

   b. If interventions are unsuccessful must work with the family on a planned transition to a more appropriate setting

Tutoring List

All school-age children must be originally registered at their home school during the annual registration process. The only exceptions to this rule include children enrolled in specialized programming at another District school building.

Parents or legal guardians interested in having their child(ren) attend a school other than their home school must complete an In-District Transfer request form, which is available below, in each District school office, or at the District Administration Center located at 2929 W. 87th Street. The deadline to submit an In-District Transfer request for the 2023-2024 school year is July 31, 2023.

In-District Transfer requests are only considered for approval after the general registration process has been completed. The parent or guardian requesting the transfer will be notified prior to the start of school if the transfer has been approved or not. Transfers are approved or denied depending on several factors, including class size and school enrollment, academic and social/emotional factors, and student attendance and disciplinary data. In-District Transfers are valid for the current school year only. District administration reserves the right to review the progress of students granted In-District Transfers on a quarterly basis and rescind the transfer at that time, if necessary, based on specific academic, attendance, and behavior issues.
