  • Tapping Into Early Intervention Services
  •

Mary Flanagan, student support services coordinator, reminds parents who suspect that their child ages birth to three years of age may have a disability can arrange for an evaluation through Child and Family Connections. This program is funded through the state and is not part of a school district’s programs. Children must be evaluated and found eligible for services due to delays.

    Services may include:

    • Speech and language therapy

    • Occupational therapy

    • Physical therapy

    • Developmental therapy

    • Other therapies/services as warranted

Preschool Programs – Ages 3 – 5 years (not in kindergarten) When a child turns three years of age, they may be eligible for services through the school district if they meet certain eligibility requirements. This can happen in a few different ways.

Transition from Early Intervention Services (0 – 3 years). Eligibility for special education services may be based on evaluations/reports from Early Intervention team and/or evaluations conducted by the school district.

Preschool Screening Recommendations District 124 conducts preschool screenings periodically throughout the school year where basic learning skills, motor skills, social skills, and speech/ language development are assessed.

District Preschool Programs/Services Children may be found eligible for one of the following:

  • 1. Speech & language services (usually once or twice a week – 30 minute sessions). Eligibility is determined after a speech/language screening and a full speech/language evaluation are conducted when deemed necessary based
on screening results. Please note that certain sound errors are considered developmental, meaning they are not expected until a certain age. Children are not eligible for services when errors are developmental as these sounds are considered normal errors at a certain age and should develop as the children gets older.

  • 2. Pre-Kindergarten At Risk Program – not special education (eligibility is based on risk factors such as basic skill deficits, non-English speaking, low-income level, developmental delays, health issues, etc.) Children must attend a district preschool screening in order to be considered eligible for this program.

  • 3. Early Childhood Special Education Program— eligibility for this program is determined following a full case study evaluation which may be conducted by the school psychologist, school social worker, speech/language pathologist, and/or other specialists as warranted. Any combination of these specialists may do an evaluation based on the individual child’sdelays and needs. A full evaluation may be recommended based on results of the preschool screening or transition for Early Intervention (birth-three services).
  • Preschool programs are half-day programs. Three year olds and four year olds may be blended in the same classroom

in both morning and afternoon sessions. All preschool programs meet five days per week.

    Please Note:

Students must be found eligible for district services/ programs. If children do not qualify for one of the district preschool programs there are several private preschools in the community to consider at your own expense.

Some possibilities include the Evergreen Park Recreation department, parochial schools, and community daycare programs.
