Students learn about the reasons for seasons and take notes of facts they want to remember.

After reading a Native American tale about the Big Dipper students  constructed a story wheel to represent the motions of the constellation.

Given six labeled constellations, students measured interior angles using a protractor.

Students learned about quilt codes used to help slaves escaping from the south on the Underground Railroad by reading Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt and/or The Secret to Freedom.

They then constructed quilt squares of their own containing hidden messages.

On a United States map students plotted routes used on the Underground Railroad given longitude and latitude. Colored pencils helped in delineating states that were Union or Confederate

Which season is your favorite? Students chose their favorite season and created a sensory poem about it.

It was so much fun many students wrote two!

Mystery Constellation—Can you guess what the constellation is? Using grid paper students graphed coordinates then completed a dot-to-dot to reveal the hidden constellation.
