The children’s novel “The One and Only Ivan” has been selected as the title for this year’s Evergreen Reads community reading program.
The Newbery Medal winner tells the story of a silverback gorilla named Ivan who lives in a cage at a mall. The novel is written in first person from the point of view of Ivan, the gorilla. The book was written by Katherine Applegate and illustrated by Patricia Perez.
Evergreen Reads is a community-wide program sponsored jointly by EPSD 124 and the Evergreen Library. The goal of Evergreen Reads is to bring voices across the village together to learn from, and about one another in a fun way.
“The objective is to get the entire community to share the experience of reading and discussing the same book, like a village-wide book club,” D124 Superintendent Dr. Robert Machak said.
The District and the Evergreen Park library will make a select number of copies of the book available for those interested in participating in Evergreen Reads, in both English and Spanish. In addition to the standard novel, the book is also available in a second format that relies heavily on illustrations for readers at a lower level.
