Special Education Services

 

All students in District 124 are eligible to receive programs and services, which may include:

1)     Diagnostic Services by the Instructional Assessment Team (IAP).  This team is composed of the psychologist, social worker, nurse, speech/language pathologist, occupational and physical therapist.

 

2)     Social Work services are available in each school.  The Social Workers role is to identify and prevent problems within the school setting.  Areas to be addressed are self-esteem, peer relationships, behavior, social skills etc.  Services may include counseling and coordination of services to students in the community.  These services are not limited to special education students,

 

3)     Speech and Language services are provided for students with speech and/ or language problems.  Areas to be addressed are articulation, fluency, voice, receptive and expressive language disorders.  Students must meet eligible criteria for services.

 

4)     Occupational/Physical Therapy services are provided for students who have difficulty with fine and/or gross motor skills.  In order to receive services the student must be eligible for special education services.

 

5)     Adapted Physical Education services are available for students who have gross motor difficulties to provide them with assistance in the Physical Education program.

 

6)     Resource or Self Contained Special Education Teachers provide specialized instruction within a self-contained classroom or in a variety of settings-integrated in the general education classroom (push in) or outside of the classroom (pull out).

 

7)     Teacher Assistants may assist students within the general education or special education classroom under the guidance of the special education teacher.
