Ø      Additions, and/or at least some minimum renovations – Possible projects:

Central Junior High School

 

1.      Stairwells.

2.      Age of building.

4.      Unsecured/undefined entrance.

Northeast

 

Gym – smallest of all the schools in the district.

 

All Schools

 

1.      Traffic flow.

2.      Air conditioning.

3.      Temporary classrooms – repair or replace.

4.      Flexibility.


Ø      Partner Schools – combining North Schools making one Pre-Kindergarten – 3rd Grade Center and the other school a 4th – 6th Grade Center.  The same configuration for the two South Schools.

·        Bussing

Advantages

 

1.      Equalizes class sizes between schools.

2.      Provides common plan time between teachers.

3.      Increases diversity.

4.      May promote a better sense of community.

5.      Will eventually lead to a reduction in classes on same level which will equate to a savings on teacher’s salaries and benefits.

 

Disadvantages

 

1.      Loss of neighborhood schools

2.      Students would not be able to walk to school.

3.      Bussing students/cost of bussing.

4.      Does not address space needs

5.      Staggered start times – could reduce parent’s ability to work hours/and impact on child care for siblings.

6.      Bullying issues.

7.      Further divides parent volunteerism and fund raising by splitting up schools.

8.      Too many transitions.

 


Ø      5th / 6th Grade Center/Pre-Kindergarten – 4th GradeMake Northeast School a 5th /6th Grade Intermediate Center.  Leave the other grade schools Kindergarten – 4th Grade Centers.  Move the Pre-Kindergarten through 4th Grades that currently attend Northeast School to the other three grade schools.

 

·        Larger addition at Northeast School

·        Renovations/ small additions at CJHS

·        Update drop offs

·        Air conditioning

·        Bussing – all 5th and 6th grade students and students in the NE quadrant

Advantages

           

1.      Provides more space across the District.

2.      Could service 5th and 6th grade band students in their school.

3.      Mobile classrooms could be eliminated.

4.      Promotes diversity.

5.      Would offer a more comprehensive middle school program.

 

Disadvantages

 

1.      Loss of ‘buddies’.

2.      Would still need construction.

3.      More bussing than with other options.

4.      Split quadrant.

5.      Car traffic.

6.      Staggered start times.

7.      Too many transitions.

8.      Northeast students would be bussed more than students from other quadrants.

 

 

 


Ø      Central Junior – 6th, 7th, 8th Grade Center and Kindergarten - 5th Grade Elementary Schools.  Move all 6th Grade students to Central Junior High School.

 

·        Large addition/renovations at Central Junior High School and minimum renovations at other schools.)

·        Update drop offs

·        Air conditioning

Advantages

 

1.      Free up space at each of the elementary schools.

2.      Requires no bussing.

3.      Provides for expanded extra-curricular activities for 6th graders.

4.      Building needs a better flow and this could be achieved with construction.

5.      Adds an extra year of diversity.

6.      Gains the benefit of team teaching.

 

Disadvantages

 

1.      Requires an addition.

2.      6th grade students loose the opportunity for ‘job responsibilities’ at the lower grades.

3.      Maturity level.

4.      Gym space.

5.      Keeping 6th grade students separate from other students could be achieved through scheduling, but would require juggling.

 


Ø      Pre-Kindergarten / Kindergarten Center – Classrooms for Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Programs.

 

·        8-10 classroom additions or new site and minimum renovation at other schools.

·        Update drop offs

·        Air conditioning

·        Bussing (pre-school and Kindergarten students

Advantages

 

1.      Provides for better coordination and expansion of early intervention programs.

2.      Opens additional space at each elementary school.

3.      Gains 8-10 classrooms – NE – 5, NW – 1.5, SE – 1, SW – 1

4.      Improves traffic flow.

5.      Helps with traffic at each of the other elementary schools.

6.      Frees up gym space at each of the other elementary schools.

7.      Promotes diversity.

8.      Concentrates construction at one location only – reducing costs and disruptions.

9.      Community boost.

10.  Could equalize and expand services for pre-kindergarten/kindergarten students.

11.  Could run a Head Start program.

 

Disadvantages

 

1.      Bussing students/cost of bussing.

2.      Older siblings would not be able to walk kindergarten students one-way.

3.      Staggered start times – could reduce parent’s ability to work hours/and impact on child care for siblings.

4.      Would require a Coordinator on-site.
